The Devon Hills...
I was up and at 'em for 9.15. I had breakfast in the Beefeater, they open
especially between 7.30 and 9.00am for the Travel Inn guests so was ahead of
the game for once.
However for the first time in 20 something days, it was raining, well
drizzling anyway. The forecast was for drizzle and overcast in the morning,
but brightening later with sun and a strong breeze developing from the south
west (of course).
I hung on for ten minutes, and the rain did ease and so I set off. This
evening I was staying in Bish Mill near South Molton at Rosie's brother's
house, so the distance was a bit shorter, only 38 miles.
The route was very straight forward, simply following the B3227 all the
way from Taunton to South Molton. I let my Sat Nav take control and
followed its directions.
Initially the route was flat but as I left Somerset and entered Devon
that all changed. The road became a series of steep hills with shorts bits
of flat roads in between.
At one point I left my Sat Nav take me on a short cut. It took me off the
B road, up a hill so steep I had to push for twenty minutes, only to find
when I got to the top, that it had cut out half a mile. It would have been
quicker to stay on the main road.
I arrived in Bampton at 12.00 with just 15 miles to go. I was feeling
cold; there was no sun and the cold wind had picked up and it was in my face.
I had a pint of coke in the pub which didn't help. So when I
continued 20 minutes later I put on my jumper.
So what do you know, as I climbed up a really steep hill out of Bampton
for 40 minutes with the sweat pouring off my face, the sun came out and it
turned nice and warm...
I new I should of taken my jumper off but I stuck with it. It now walks
and talks on its own.
Once on the top of the ridge I had beautiful views and a pleasant cycle
down into Bish Mill. I arrived a bit early 3.00pm, so I popped into the
local pub for a couple.
I am looking forward to a really nice tea and a couple more later....
Tomorrow will be another hilly day hopefully arriving in Launceston later
in the afternoon...
Speak to you tomorrow Phil
